Ludwigsburger Schloss

Marcus asked me if I wanted to see some sites on Monday and offered to drive me around. I once did a jig saw puzzle of a lovely castle in Germany but it was too far away to drive so Marcus called his bride ( Monika ) and she immediately suggested Lugwigsburg. After the tour we met up for lunch but in the meantime we walked the grounds of this palace from the 17'th century.

The residents of Ludwigsburg have always had the reputation for taking life a little bit easier. Not hard to understand after only a short walk through the grounds which provide an oasis of nature right in the middle of the city. The largest baroque castle in Germany forms the magnificent centrepiece of Ludwigsburg. The palace built by Duke Eberhard Ludwig between 1704 and 1733 has an amazing 452 rooms in 18 buildings and now houses 4 museums ... none of which we had time to explore. This place is nick-named the "Swabian Versailles" and you can see why. We only explored the grounds and didn't even do them justice but if you want to visit a magnificent castle on your tour then this is a can't miss place. I wish we had time to visit the interior but that will have to wait for another visit.

After the walk we went for lunch in the city centre. With its historic buildings and squares, street cafes, bistros and a large pedestrianized zone this very vibrant city centre, even on a holiday, is ideal for exploring. Being a holiday most stores were closed but even window shopping proved interesting. I now have a good excuse to come back to actually visit some of these stores.

Life is good ... enjoy

  1. Hi Dennis,

well, at your next visit to Stuttgart we will arrange a visit of the interior part of Ludwigsburger Schloss (castle) - so you can have a choice which suite you´d prefer for your next escape to Europe. The scenery would make a good stage ;-))

    Have a safe onward trip

    Cheers
    Markus
