This is truly an historic vehicle. It is the first Mercedes vehicle ever built. It was named after the daughter of Emil Jellinek who was an automotive enthusiast and an early dealer of Daimler products. Mercedes real name by the way was Adriana Manuela Ramona but was affectionately called Mercedes. Her father offered Daimler a lot of advice on what the customer was looking for in a vehicle and many of his suggestions ended up in this quite spectacular automobile first produced for sale to the public in 1901. Jellineck asked Daimler to name the vehicle after his daughter which he gladly did in appreciation of the improvements he suggested for the car. When Daimler and Benz merged in the early 20's they kept the name and that is how their vehicles became to be known as Mercedes-Benz. I wonder what the vehicles would be named if his daughter's name was Gertrude??
I loved the post office vehicle in this set of pictures. This vehicle operated in Austria for decades and literally was the post office for the many small towns. You would come to the vehicle and mail your letters, inside they sorted them and delivered them to the next village. Also note the telephone booth built into the back so locals could make calls when the vehicle visited.
The last few pictures are also interesting in that it pictures a prototype vehicle pulling a vehicle with all the test equipment to measure the various metrics required before production. There are wires strung between the two and computers in the trailing vehicle to collect the data.
Life is good ... Enjoy
